3. The Penance Stare Is Futile

This really shouldn't really be all that shocking considering the Ghost Riders are granted power from the arch-demon himself.

However, considering the comically gargantuan amount of sinning he's done in his long life, one wouldn't be completely silly to think the stare might do some damage. Sadly for Ghost Rider, every iteration of which seem to almost immediately turn on their master, his deadliest weapon is null and void here.

The Penance Stare is a debilitating, normally fatal attack in which Ghost Rider causes the victim to go through every sin they've ever committed. For Mephisto, someone who is essentially The God of Evil (sorry Darkseid), taking a stroll down sinful memory lane is more of a good laugh than anything else. Considering the red menace's immense power and aggression, Ghost Rider's chances of even restraining the Hell lord long enough to lock it in are typically slim to none anyway.

Mephisto's trusty son Blackheart, a fellow who looks absolutely nothing like him, is also immune to the Penance Star on account of his being a soulless fiend. This likely comes as a surprise to the dozens (?) of folks who loved the Nicolas Cage films. Blackheart, re-tailored to look like Ricky from 'American Beauty', was soundly crushed by the stare after he absorbed the souls of people in a town that made him more powerful or... something...
