When former Oscorp employee, Conrad Marcus, erroneously deduced that Miles' father, Jefferson Davis, was Spider-Man, he vowed to kill him for destroying Norman Osborn's legacy.

Marcus stole a sample of the Venom Symbiote, bonded with it, and attacked Jefferson right outside his home. Jefferson was heavily injured, forcing him to be transported to a hospital where Miles' mother, Rio Morales, worked. Realising the Symbiote could kill both his parents, Miles took out Venom with, ironically, a Venom Blast.

Even though the threat was neutralised, police officers burst into the hospital and were so freaked out by the giant alien, they shot at it wildly. Although they managed to kill Marcus, they accidentally shot Rio through the chest.

As she bled out, she told Miles never to reveal his secret identity to Jefferson, knowing that he had a passionate disdain for all so-called heroes. Miles was so heartbroken and disillusioned, he quit being a superhero and even recreated Spider-Man's iconic "NO MORE!" moment.

When Miles was incorporated into the main Marvel universe, a cosmic entity called Molecule Man brought his mother back to life.
