When Miles' father, Jefferson Davis, was a young man, he was recruited by a gangster called Turk. At the same time, Nick Fury tracked him down and made him an undercover agent of SHIELD. He ordered Jefferson to accept Turk's job offer so he could keep tabs on New York's criminal underworld. This worked out in Fury's favour as Jefferson's intel allowed him to arrest Wilson Fisk (long before he became the Kingpin).

Seeing how dangerous life was as an undercover agent, Jefferson stopped working with Fury and became a police officer. Because of his time with SHIELD, Jefferson witnessed firsthand how dangerous superpowered beings are, which has given him a deep distrust for anyone with superpowers.

When he accidentally learned of Miles' secret identity, he believed his son killed Jefferson's brother, Aaron, and thus, disowned his child. He eventually learned the error of his ways and accepted Miles' superhero lifestyle.

When Jefferson went missing, Miles followed his father's footsteps and became a SHIELD agent to track him down. Jefferson has recently rejoined SHIELD so he can monitor his son's whereabouts when he is busy on his superhero adventures.
