Star Wars: 10 Best Expanded Universe Comics From The New Canon

8. Doctor Aphra (2016-2019)

Star Wars Vader Down
Lucasfilm

First appearing in Darth Vader #3 on March 2015, Doctor Aphra quickly became a fan favourite character and headlined an ongoing series alongside the Star Wars and Darth Vader comics. Written by Kieron Gillen (Wicked + Divine) and Simon Spurrier (Crossed) and illustrated by a series of artists including Kev Walker (Doctor Strange, Surgeon Supreme).

Through 40 issues, the creative teams take the character from a tool of Darth Vader to an extremely reluctant anti-hero, who even attempts to assassinate her former Imperial employer. Alongside the charismatic Aphra, she surrounds herself with dark mirror versions of C3PO, R2D2 and Chewbacca - all of which bounce off Aphra in several humorous and intense ways.

Doctor Aphra is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars mythos and would make a perfect addition to the films as well. The comic series is an easy entry anyone interested in the Star Wars universe but intimidated by the mainline comics that tie into the films and TV series, as the comic uses Aphra as an outsider looking in on the more traditional Star Wars stories.
