One of the first major changes the TV series made from the comics was keeping Shane alive after they had left Atlanta. While the nature of his eventual demise is still pretty similar, it's actually Carl who kills Shane in the comics.

He's only eight years old when he pulls the trigger and saves his Dad. It was the first moment in the series that showed that it was going to delve into some pretty dark territory, and even the younger characters weren't safe.

This moment isn't forgotten as soon as the next story arc begins, as we see that the moment has a large impact on Carl's character, and it comes up quite often in discussions between Rick and Carl - the latter of which has very complicated feelings about it all. While it's the first time Carl kills another human, it certainly won't be the last.

Robert Kirkman really threw fans down the deep end in the first volume by featuring an eight year old murdering someone else in self-defence. While it is a great cornerstone of Carl's character and development, it really is quite a dour start to the survival story.
