1. Laura Is A God, Then Ananke Kills Her (Issue 11)

Fans were jubilant when, as they had predicted, Laura Wilson turned out to be of the Pantheon. She manifested as Persephone in issue 11, and, although it was a bit predictable, the fact that the Pantheon was only supposed to have 12 gods (plus Ananke) meant that this was quite a surprise in itself. Still, it made sense that the comic’s protagonist would get a taste of divinity.

However, this is WicDiv, so this sense of joy and triumph was turned to dust almost immediately when, with tears of happiness in her eyes, Persephone’s head exploded with a click of Ananke’s fingers. As if that wasn’t stomach-churning enough, the older woman then set her sights on Laura’s parents, who had come out to see what the commotion was, and caused them and their entire house (with Laura’s younger sister in it) to explode. The issue ends with Ananke fleeing the burning wreckage followed by a title card reading “It was never going to be okay”.

This was a nasty (and brilliant) trick to pull, leaving fans confused, devastated and ravenous for the comic’s next issue. Of course, in typical comic book-style, it turned out that Persephone had managed to evade Ananke’s murder attempt but, until that further revelation several issues later, fans were left heartbroken by this shocking and brutal twist.
