As is the nature of all ongoing mysteries, it still isn’t entirely clear what is going on here, but the revelation that Ananke, Minerva and Persephone share some kind of ancient connection was quite a twist.

Issue 34 shed a lot of light on two of these three women, featuring ancient incarnations of Ananke and Persephone as sisters as war. The two women seemingly set out the rules for the Recurrence, and made use of the ancient adage of Maiden (Minerva), Mother (Persephone) and Crone (Ananke). Every 90 years the two goddesses come face to face in a showdown which usually ends with Ananke brutally beheading Persephone when she first manifests. Persephone’s status as a rogue thirteenth god had always been intriguing, so the twist that she and Ananke helped to create the rules of the Recurrence was particularly interesting.

It remains uncertain how Minerva fits into this trio but the “wham moment” of issue 33, where it was revealed that Minerva and Ananke are somehow the same person, implied that there was far more to the youngest member of the Pantheon than anyone could ever have predicted.

The link between this curious trio not only explained a lot of the comic’s existing lore but also showed that there was still so much that readers don’t know.
