Witty, dark and mischievous - not to mention a female version of David Bowie - Lucifer was always going to be one of the comic’s most popular characters. Indeed, based on the first few issues you would likely assume that she would be a key figure throughout the comic’s entire run. This made it all the more shocking when she was killed off at the end of volume one

As if her death wasn’t flabbergasting enough, the way Lucifer was killed was also a massive blindside. Following a big superhero-style battle with various characters, it turned out to be Ananke who finished off the fallen angel. At the time, the Pantheon matriarch seemed to be a maternal - if mysterious - figure so to see her act so brutally was completely unexpected. Ananke executed Lucifer to stop her from causing more chaos and bringing negative attention to the Pantheon, but this was surely an overreaction.

The way that Lucifer was dispatched with no fanfare or emotional goodbyes was a brilliantly heartless twist and showed readers early on that no character was safe. This twist also sowed the seeds that Ananke was far more than she seemed.
