With it being unclear whether Venom 2 will draw entirely from the Maximum Carnage series, it's worth knowing about other series that the film may take inspiration from.
Of these various other comics, the part most likely to be adapted has to be the 'Cult of Carnage' introduced to us in the Web of Venom series. The organisation revolves around resurrecting an old dark god named Knull, which is perhaps a cliché, but one that'd be well worth using in order to have a secret alien cult be the focus on the film.
Importantly, Shriek would prove crucial to this storyline, as she would don the identity of 'Sandra Deel', the face of its public operations, managing to somehow convince people that the 'Church of the New Darkness' was a totally legit and not at all evil operation.
While it's likely that the film will not adapt storylines that are this modern, the idea of Carnage having a cult is one that seems too good to not sneak into the film - especially if it allows Shriek that extra moment in the limelight.
