What Happened To Everyone Who Became Batman?

7. Dick Grayson

Dick Grayson Batman
DC Comics

Of all the people to have become Batman who aren't called Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson is undoubtedly the best.

The first Robin and later Nightwing, Dick took up the cape and cowl temporarily during the events of Zero Hour in the late nineties, but the most famous and most beloved occasion when he took on the role came in Batman Reborn, in the wake of Bruce's death.

Batman Reborn was a revolutionary period for DC's Bat-titles, one that was embodied by the dynamic of a new Batman and Robin. This time Dick was joined by Damian Wayne, with the two personalities flipping the original dynamic of the duo on its head completely. Now, Robin was the no-nonsense thinker, while Batman became more adventurous and talkative.

Dick accepting the responsibility of Batman was something of a watershed moment for the character. Ever since he quit as Robin, Grayson has constantly strived to rid himself of Batman's shadow, so when he took on the cowl in 2009, it could've perhaps been argued that he'd failed his objective. However, by imbuing the role with his own personality, Dick managed to become a whole new version of the Dark Knight, and went on to star in some of - if not the - best Batman stories of the decade in Batman & Robin and Black Mirror.

Grayson reassumed the Nightwing mantle come the New 52, before becoming an Agent of S.P.Y.R.A.L. and then becoming Nightwing all over again in DC Rebirth. He was recently left with severe amnesia after surviving an assassination attempt from KGBeast, and has abandoned crimefighting altogether.
