What Happened To Everyone Who Became Ghost Rider?
8. Johnny Blaze
Created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog for Marvel Spotlight #5, Johnny Blaze was the son of a famous motorcycle stuntman who died in a stunt gone wrong. The teenage Johnny was then adopted by his father's manager Craig "Crash" Simpson, and even started falling in love with Craig's daughter (who technically was his sister because of the whole adoption thing. I'll give you a moment to barf).
But because becoming a father figure to Johnny Blaze nets you a one way ticket to deadsville, Craig soon learns that he has cancer. Desperate to not have to feel the grief of losing a father for a second time, Johnny ends up making a deal with Mephisto to save him from cancer. Unfortunately, Craig dies the next day because Mephisto promised to cure his cancer, not keep him alive afterward. And just to rub it in on poor Johnny, Mephisto then forcibly turns him into the Spirit of Vengeance, Ghost Rider, as his payment for "helping" Johnny to begin with.
As you can imagine, Johnny isn't the biggest fan of his superpowers. Even Spider-Man at his whiniest still sees swinging from the rooftops of New York as objectively awesome. Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding his transformation has managed to sour the otherwise f*cking AWESOME ability to turn into a flaming skull motorcycle man for Johnny.
Throughout his career, Ghost Rider has only had two goals on his mind: hunt down the wicked, and free himself from the spirit he's been bonded to. And while the former is obviously a bit out of his reach, he's come pretty damn close at times to finally being rid of Zarathos. But since this is Marvel, who wouldn't know commitment if it bit them in the behind, Johnny is still out there. Still riding, and still judging the wicked.
While there are more definitive endings to some of these entries, it looks like Johnny Blaze's story is going to continue for quite some time yet.
