After Reed Richards became disillusioned with the scientific community, he formed the Future Foundation - a think tank to help brilliant minds use their collective knowledge of the universe to better humanity.

After Johnny Storm was killed by Annihilus' forces, Spider-Man was brought into the Future Foundation as the Human Torch's final request. Reed felt like Peter Parker was a perfect fit for the group since he was a brilliant scientist as well as a superhero.

Shortly after Spidey joined the FF, they faced off against parallel versions of Reed Richards, The Council of Doom, and robot pirate zombies (or is it pirate zombie robots?). While fighting the Sinister Six in Amazing Spider-Man #660, the Thing witnessed Spider-Man brazenly leap into danger to protect the Future Foundation's students. Ben isn't known for dishing out praise often but he admitted that Spider-Man's actions proved Johnny was right to pick him as his replacement.

After Johnny Storm came back to life, Spidey felt like it was the right time to leave the Fantastic Four since Manhattan had just been invaded by billions of paranormal spiders. (To be fair, that's a pretty good excuse to quit any job.)
