After being exposed to gamma radiation, the Thing reverted to his human form. Although Ben Grimm was exhilarated that he looked normal again, the radiation caused him to lose his superstrength, forcing him to leave the Fantastic Four. Believing they needed a heavy hitter like the Thing, the team had Ben switched out for Luke Cage.

For their first mission together, the Four took on the Wrecking Crew. Ben felt so left out, he tagged along and fought the Crew's leader, the Wrecker, head on. When the Wrecker hurled Ben off a building, Cage caught him and saved his life, which left him so humiliated, he promised he was gone for good.

Even though things seemed to be working well with Cage, the founding Defender seemingly turned on his teammates after he began thrashing the Baxter Building. Out of desperation, Reed had Ben wear a makeshift exoskeleton that replicated his powers as Thing and ordered the team to stop Cage.

When they discovered he was being mind-controlled by the Puppet Master, the Fantastic Four had the mad puppeteer arrested. Since Ben's exoskeleton allowed him to pull his weight on the team, Cage exited the FF and let Ben return.
