During the Civil War, the Wakandan embassy in New York was destroyed, leaving Black Panther without a residence in the city. Reed offered T'Challa and his new bride, Storm, to relocate to the Baxter Building and serve as their replacements on the Fantastic Four while they take a break.

During their tenure, the new additions helped Johnny and Ben battle Galactus' heralds, the Frightful Four, and the Hulk. (They were also teleported to a world of zombies by a bunch of magical frogs. That is a thing that actually happened.)

Even though Ben and Johnny made the Wakandan king and queen feel more than welcome, their inclusion came one huge problem - politics. While this incarnation of the Fantastic Four battled aliens, monsters, and supervillains, SHIELD and the US government assumed Black Panther's membership on the team had a political agenda. Because the Civil War had torn the country right down the middle, SHIELD's director, Tony Stark, didn't want T'Challa's presence in the United States to complicate the matter any further and encouraged him to return to Wakanda.

Black Panther's absence in Africa also allowed Killmonger time to lead an uprising in Wakanda, which took months for T'Challa to reverse.
