What Happened To Everyone Who Joined The Guardians Of The Galaxy?

26. Groot

Guardians of the Galaxy Thing
Marvel Comics

Groot's origins are... weird.

He was first introduced in Tales To Astonish #13, and was actually a creation of Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. He uh, did not go places like the other characters introduced in that comic line. Not for a while, at least. Groot basically went bye-bye for DECADES after this one comic, until he was brought back, of course, for Dan Abnett's Guardians run.

Where he was a joke of a villain. What?

Yeah when Groot first showed up again, he was mostly played for laughs as a pathetic villain. But as he kept losing, he also lost his vocabulary and eventually joined the Guardians as their equivalent to Chewbacca. From this moment forth he was the lovable loyal Guardian of the Galaxy we all know and love today.

Groot's appearance is about as consistent as his origin, which is to say, not much, as can likely be surmised by the above image. But of course, with the 2014 movie, Groot's design has remained pretty consistent ever since, and thank god for that, since it's by far the best of his designs so far.
