From J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, 1987's Kraven's Last Hunt is viewed as one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever.

When thinking of ol' Web-head's greatest rivals, names like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and foe-cum-friend Venom instantly come to mind. One rogue who deserves to be in that conversation, yet who often gets overlooked, is Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter.

The biggest of big game hunters, Kraven views Spider-Man as the ultimate prize - and thus, in Kraven's Last Hunt, we see Kravinoff's masterful plan play out beautifully.

Not only does Sergei want to defeat Spidey, he wants to prove that he can be a greater hero than his rival.

After landing in New York, drugging Spider-Man and taking him captive, Kraven does what few comic book readers of the time could ever imagine: he shot, killed and buried Peter Parker.

From there, the villain throws on his own variation of Spider-Man's black suit - which was the outfit of choice for the Wall-crawler at that time - and dishes out brutal justice on the city's wrongdoers.

The kicker here, is that Kraven had only shot Parker with a hefty tranquilliser. Once the now-not-dead Spider-Man climbs out of his grave, he confronts Sergei and is met by a sincere warrior who admits he just wanted to prove he could get the better of his long-time foe.

Alarmingly, Sergei Kravinoff then kills himself with a shotgun - having achieved all in life that he'd set out to.
