Hidden Figures proved to be almost the forgotten movie of awards season, leaving the Oscars empty-handed. It is, however, a compelling and uplifting tale of black women playing a crucial role in the space race and advancing the world of mathematics while they are at it. The film is an absolute joy to watch and features the story of inspiring real women.

In fact, these characters are so inspiring they deserve to be explored further. Katherine Johnson, who was played by Taraji P Henson in the film, would go on to be instrumental in digital computing and in various missions to the moon. A sequel could also explore Janelle Monáe's Mary Jackson, who would spend 34 years at NASA and achieve a senior engineering role.

A sequel to Hidden Figures might not have the same level of awards potential as the original film, but it could be just as life-affirming and warm.
