6. Rumours
The new film from experimental surrealist Guy Maddin (The Forbidden Room) is an utterly unhinged comedy-horror in which various world leaders meet up at the G7, only to find themselves lost in the woods as supernatural dangers encroach upon them.
Rumours premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last May to solid reviews and went on to settle at 75% with the wider body of critics, but for regular punters it didn't go down smoothly at all.
Rumours has a mere 28% approval from general viewers, who presumably were drawn to the strong cast led by Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, and Alicia Vikander, as well as trailers which heavily focused on the film's more outrageous horror elements.
In reality, though, there are some long, talky stretches between Rumours' outlandish genre moments, with a common complaint among commenter reviews being that the film is "boring."
For any of Maddin's fans concerned that he'd turned mainstream by roping in such a distinguished cast, that clearly wasn't the case.
