10 Acclaimed Recent Movies That Audiences HATED

2. Emilia Pérez

There has been no wider gulf between critical and audience opinion this past year than with the exhausting saga of Emilia Pérez, which was widely lauded following its Cannes premiere last May, and currently sits at a decent 73% critical rating.

But the general audience response following its Netflix release last November can't even be called polarising - with a unfathomable 18% audience score, it has been firmly rejected by viewers at large.

Emilia Pérez has proven controversial for its depiction of both trans people and Mexico as a nation, while the merits of its musical elements and performances have also sparked much debate.

And this is without getting into exterior factors, such as lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón's bevy of offensive tweets which were unearthed mere days after Oscar nominations came out.

It's basically unprecedented for a Best Picture-nominated film to receive this much scorn from general audiences, and if it goes on to win the Best Picture Oscar as some believe it will, it'll surely beat out Crash and Green Book to become the most unpopular winner of the last 25 years, if not ever.
