10 Actors Who Openly Hated Working With Their Directors
4. Gene Hackman Vs. Wes Anderson - The Royal Tenenbaums
A lot of actors would be flattered if you wrote a part for them in mind. The idea of not only being the first choice but the only choice is something a lot of aspiring performers can only dream of.
Gene Hackman, however, is on the other side of the scale. He hates having parts written for him and told Wes Anderson just this, before Anderson even began writing The Royal Tenenbaums... specifically for Gene Hackman to star in.
Eventually, Hackman caved, agreeing to shoot a movie he had no interest in, directed by a man who'd insulted him and being paid a fraction of what he was used to.
Hackman was so rude and abrasive that the whole cast was too intimidated by him to spend any time around him, and he seemed to make a point of being as difficult as possible out of pure spite. In the end, the only reason the shoot was finished is because Hackman's friend and co-star Bill Murray agreed to come in on his days off, keeping Hackman in check by virtue of being the only person not terrified of him.
