10 Actors Who Went Too Far On Set
9. Daniel Day-Lewis - The Last Of The Mohicans
When you're forced to seek professional help for claustrophobia and hallucinations after completing a movie, you know you took things too far. That was the plight Daniel Day-Lewis found himself in after diving headfirst into the role of Hawkeye in Michael Mann's critically-acclaimed historical drama The Last of the Mohicans.
Day-Lewis is another method man with a reputation for taking things to the Nth extreme, and this was no exception. While filming Mohicans, he insisted on living off the land for the duration of the location shoot, to get into the mindset of Hawkeye.
He learned how to craft canoes, hunt animals and hurl tomahawks, eating only what he killed or harvested, and completing a gruelling combat training programme with a US army colonel to ensure he looked the part during action scenes.
The only problem was that Day-Lewis had no idea how not to be Hawkeye afterwards.
