10 Actors Who Won't Be Coming Back For Upcoming Sequels
6. Emily Blunt - Soldado
Denis Villeneuve's crime-drama Sicario was a surprise hit back in 2015, one of those timely films that ends up doing great business at the box office despite the fact that - shock! - there's a female in the leading role (take that, Hollywood).
Emily Blunt put in a fantastic turn as FBI agent Kate Macer - so much so that the studio decided to put a sequel into development. Then came the news that the sequel would instead focus on Benicio del Toro's vengeful assassin character, Alejandro Gillick, and his ongoing war against the cartel. But there'd still be a place for Blunt, right, even if she turned up in a supporting role or something? Uh...
According to screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, nope. When questioned directly about whether Macer would appear in the sequel (titled "Soldado"), he said: "Her arc was complete. I couldn’t figure out a way to write a character that would do her talent justice. Look what she went through. It was a difficult role."
Understandable from a story perspective, but Blunt is sure to be a bit peeved that she was left out: her performance was one of the reasons the original was so great.
What It Means For The Film:
It'll be strange to have a sequel without the main character from the original, but Taylor Sheridan is a fantastic screenwriter and you have to trust his instincts when he says that Macer's arc was complete. Ultimately, Soldado is gonna be better for it.
