10 Amazing "Call And Responses" In Wrestling
5. Rob Van Dam - The Thumbs
A case can be made that Rob Van Dam is the coolest guy to ever step into the ring.
As the jewel in the chaotic Extreme Championship Wrestling crowd, ‘Mr Pay Per View’ blew wrestling fans away with his innovative and death defying wrestling style and he got over. Big.
When ECW folded and then picked up from the trash by Vince McMahon, a number of people were curious how RVD’s unique skill set would translate to the mainstream. Very well would be the answer to that once, as despite being part of the Alliance, Van Dam became the most popular star on the show and crashed the main event storylines.
Once the Invasion deflated into a wet fart of an ending, RVD became ‘Mr Monday Night’, becoming a mainstay on Monday Night Raw and winning a multitude of championships within the company.
But he was never a promo guy. It was his natural charisma that built his connection with the fans, and nothing resonated more than the ego-centric thumb point. Done three times before he hit a big spot, RVD would be greeted by a whole crowd chanting his name to each point.
Gloriously simple. Wonderfully arrogant.
RVD was so good, wasn’t he?
