The zombie is a creature known far and wide, having shambled it's way from Haitian folklore and the Vodou religion to the height of cinema and entertainment. But where did this horror monster's cinema resume get kickstarted? Well, that'd be the progenitor of the modern zombie movie, George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead.

However, this film nearly didn't happen at all, as it struggled to get off the ground due to the scariest horror of all - finances.

Night of the Living Dead's budget and lack of investors were so famously low that even the production crew and actors had to chip in, contributing $600 each to keep the thing afloat (as per Variety). It was also revealed in the book Cult Movies that Romero had to pause filming multiple times to use early footage to entice new investors.

Even after all the struggle and toil of filming this gory masterpiece, the film came dangerously close to having no distributor, with companies like Columbia and American International Pictures turning it down before the Walter Reade Organisation offered to screen it.

There's a whole genre of horror that might not have existed without this movie, so thank the zombie gods that it all worked out in the end.
