10 Amazing Horror Movies That Almost Never Got Made
7. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Everyone and their (Reservoir) dogs know the name, Quentin Tarantino, as this beloved filmmaker is often considered the apex of blood-soaked cinema. However, not many know that his first paid screenwriting gig was penning the script for the bizarre crime thriller turned vampire horror film From Dusk Till Dawn, conceived by special effects guru Robert Kurtzman.
However, while the Tarantino name means everything now, at the time, it didn't help to get this movie off the ground.
This bonkers vampire flick was met with intense scepticism by all the studios it was pitched for. It was deemed by many to be "too vulgar and violent," with some producers also lamenting the lack of foreshadowing for the sudden supernatural twist midway through the story (as per Joblo). This led to a period of nearly ten years of no momentum for the production. It didn't help that Kurtzman wanted to direct the film himself, with his lack of experience being a turnoff for many studios (via ScreenHorrorMag).
Thankfully, things changed after Pulp Fiction boosted Tarantino's influence and the visionary Robert Rodriguez was brought on to direct. It was a match made in heaven that produced a cult classic.
