Before they worked together on the movie Panic Room, Jodie Foster got a subtle name drop during David Fincher’s Se7en.

As detectives David Mills and William Somerset try to work out a motive for the apparent senseless spree of killings they are investigating, Mills reveals some ridiculous explanations that he has heard given by murderers in the past. Such as “Jodie Foster made me do it” and “My dog told me to do it”.

Bizarrely, these are based on genuine statements told to police by criminals in real life. John Hinckley Jr. had became infatuated with Jodie Foster after seeing her in Taxi Driver and claimed that he was trying to impress her when he attempted to assassinate U.S. President, Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Whereas David Berkowitz, an American serial killer better known as the ‘Son of Sam’, claimed that his neighbour’s dog demanded the blood of pretty, young girls, and this was one of the reasons for his string of murders.

Sometimes reality really is stranger than fiction.
