10 Amazing Things Hidden In Se7en

2. John Doe Cameo

The surrendering of John Doe, as the blood-covered serial killer enters the police station, is one of the most shocking moments in film history, not least because Kevin Spacey was not featured in any of the movie’s promotion pre-release.

Spacey was deliberately absent from any posters or trailers to make his reveal all the more surprising for movie-goers. It certainly worked as fans were shocked to see Spacey suddenly appear on their screen almost 90 minutes into the movie. But that wasn’t actually the first time he appeared.

Around the hour mark, Detectives Somerset and Mills discover the ‘sloth’ victim from the serial killer’s spree of killings and are then ambushed by a photographer in the stairwell outside the apartment. This is John Doe.

Disguised in a wig and glasses and barely visible to the audience, it would be almost impossible to spot this subtle moment upon first viewing. But if you slow the footage down and look closely as Mills slaps the camera out of the photographer’s hand, you can recognise that it is indeed Kevin Spacey who was right in front of us long before anybody realised he was even in the movie.
