John Jeremiah Johnson was one of those historical figures with so many stories that often sit somewhere between fact and myth. After deserting the US Army during the Mexican-American War, Johnson traveled west to the Rocky Mountains where he would settle as a mountain man. It was there he would became a legend for his incredible trapping and hunting skills.

Robert Redford starred in a 1972 western film about Johnson’s life in the mountains and the most defining story of his entire legend. After the Native American Crow nation supposedly killed his wife, Johnson went on a murderous hunt for revenge where he killed multiple members of the Crow nation and allegedly ate some of their livers.

There were many iconic scenes in the film, but the one most synonymous with its iconography was Robert Redford wearing a skinned bear head as a hat. It seems this made quite the impression on Rockstar, as players can hunt down a legendary bear in the game and fashion a bear hat of their own. It’s both a great way to reference a classic western film while also giving players a suitable reward for hunting down such an epic foe.
