10 Awesome Horror Films That Didn't Rely On CGI

7. Eli

Netflix

This pleasant surprise only recently landed on Netflix, and it's hard to talk about without revealing any spoilers. Eli is essentially John Travolta in The Boy In The Plastic Bubble if it were a horror film.

The titular boy (Charlie Shotwell) suffers from an auto-immune disease that prevents him from being exposed to the outdoors. His parents (Kelly Reilly and Max Martini) take him to an isolated mansion/medical centre run by Lili Taylor, who promises a cure for his illness. But ghostly interactions around the mansion, as well as contact with a young girl outside, suggest Taylor's medical experiments are more sinister than she's let on.

The film climaxes with a surprise you won't see coming, exploding in a few instances of gore and a severely bleak ending. Beyond a slight, awkward shot of a crushed face, most of the fear and paranoia the film depends upon is entirely practical, making it one of the most interesting Netflix releases in recent years.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
