4. Late Phases

It's essentially impossible to top the practical werewolf transformation scenes of An American Werewolf in London and The Howling. The former is terrifying as well as heartbreaking, with audiences feeling every ounce of pain the lead character is suffering. The former is just downright nightmarish, with a deranged serial killer becoming something so much worse.

In recent years, however, Late Phases comes the closest. Starring Nick Damici as a retired, blind Vietnam veteran forced into a retirement community whose neighbours are being picked off one by one, this underrated comic thriller has a lot of fun with its creature design.

The transformation, created by make-up artist Robert Kurtzman, took two full days. Originally intended to be done in with several cameras and edited to appear as one shot, the rig just wouldn't work correctly.
