10 Awesome Movies That Urgently Need a Director's Cut

9. JJ Abrams' Star Trek

Also due in theaters this summer is the much anticipated follow-up/sequel to the Star trek reboot that we received in 2009 from the mind of JJ Abrams, Bob Orci, and Alex Kurtzman. This new, relaunched film was fantastic in nearly every way, including its spot-on casting, writing, and overall science fiction execution. The nods given to past Trek series episodes and characters were sly and well done, and the end product was a slick reinvention of your father's classic Star Trek universe. However, the film itself feels desperate to tell more of its story as it relates to the characters: more about Kirk, more about Uhura (if she's going to get so much screen time AND a new storyline with Spock then we need her backstory!), and even more about the history of the entire crew. This is the one aspect of the original cut that feels rushed: character development. Even the story revolving around classic Spock and new Spock felt hampered by the constraint of the timing edit. Down the line we are bound to see a JJ cut of this film, but don't look for it anytime soon as Paramount Studios continues to find ways to get the most out of this franchise in the future.
