6. Solange - The Front Room
Perhaps the low-key most satisfying death scene from a horror movie nobody actually watched? It just might go to A24's critical and commercial flop The Front Room.
The psychological horror, written and directed by Robert Eggers' brothers Max and Sam, follows Belinda (Brandy), a pregnant professor who agrees to move her surly mother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) into her home during her final days in exchange for receiving a massive inheritance when she passes.
To call Solange the in-law from hell is quite the understatement - a religious nut and a racist, Solange is a vile human being, brought to life by a frankly superb performance from the great Kathryn Hunter, who is clearly having an absolute ball with the role.
By the film's end, Solange's condition has deteriorated enough that she begs for death, and when Belinda wakes up the next morning, she discovers that Solange has indeed died. However, the final scene reveals that Solange didn't merely die of natural causes - Belinda actually crept into her room and smothered her to death with a pillow.
The Eggers Brothers linger on the act and, considering how obnoxious Solange has been for the entirety of the movie leading up to this, it's near-impossible not to find catharsis in her well-earned demise. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
