10 Awesome Recent Movies That Must Never Get Sequels

6. Don't Breathe

Dont breathe
Screen Gems

Don't Breathe is an instant cult classic that came totally out of nowhere and grossed an impressive $157.1 million on a $10 million budget.

The 2016 horror film saw a gang of teen thieves facing off against an unexpectedly prepared blind army vet (Stephen Lang) with truly gnarly results. Melding a certain grindhouse-inspired luridness with beautifully grimy visuals and top-drawer performances, Don't Breathe is a much better film than just about anyone expected.

It's also perfect as a one-and-done effort, with the ending leaving both the surviving "hero" and villain alive, each keeping the other's not-so-glamourous secret as they move on with their lives. Like Hereditary, letting the chaos carry on in viewers' minds is far more gratifying.

Will It Happen?: Director Fede Álvarez talked up the prospect of a sequel shortly after Don't Breathe hit cinemas, and producer Sam Raimi even said, "It's only the greatest idea for a sequel I've ever heard. I'm not kidding."

Still, if it's going to happen they need to strike fast, because the general public's memory sure ain't long, and this isn't exactly a film that screams out for a sequel.

This feels like it might be one of those sequels that just languishes around in development limbo for many years before everyone finally realises they've missed the boat.

Considering that Álvarez couldn't get a sequel to his hit 2013 Evil Dead reboot made and he may be busy with the Dragon Tattoo franchise for the foreseeable future, it's probably not happening. Phew.
