10 Awesome War Movies About Obscure Conflicts

1. Waltz With Bashir

Black Hawk Down
Sony Pictures Classics

This beautifully animated semi-autobiographical movie about Israel’s 1982 war with Lebanon explores memory, amnesia, and atrocity. It's poetic, meditative, and unusual - and it considers one of the most uncomfortable periods in Israeli history with a nuanced, thoughtful, and restrained melancholy.

The Sabra and Shatila massacres were committed during Israel's siege of Beirut. Christian Phalangists, allies of Israel, killed between five hundred and three thousand Palestinians (the final number is fiercely disputed) who were taking shelter in Sabra, a suburb of Beirut, and Shatila, an adjacent refugee camp. Israeli forces - including Ariel Sharon, who would later become Israeli prime minister - knew about it, but failed to prevent the slaughter.

Waltz With Bashir tells the story from the point of view of its creator, who fought in the war but cannot remember anything about it. Over the course of the film, he remembers his role in the conflict and has to face up to his own sense of responsibility for this great historic wrong.

Visually powerful, haunting, and constructed with great sensitivity and humanity, Waltz With Bashir is essential viewing.
