Winning an Oscar for her captivating performance as volatile superfan Annie Wilkes in Stephen King adaptation Misery, Kathy Bates has earned her place as one of the biggest names in horror. It’s only fitting, then, that she’s become a major part of American Horror Story since she debuted as venomous socialite Delphine LaLaurie in Coven.

Also earning two Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmys, Bates is arguably one of the biggest names in both film and television still working today. Seeing her name attached to a project is a guarantee of quality, with Fried Green Tomatoes, Titanic, and Midnight In Paris being a small example of what she’s capable of.

One film that will never be synonymous with Bates’ career is Mary McGuckian’s The Bridge Of San Luis Rey.

Adapted from Thornton Wilder’s novel of the same name, this period drama saw Bates as the Marquess of Montemayor, who, along with four others, dies when the titular bridge collapses. Witnessing the accident, a friar (Gabriel Byrne) decides to find out as much as he can about these people to understand why God would allow this tragedy.

Despite its gleaming ensemble cast, this monumentally dull drama failed to impress anyone upon its release.
