3. The Blackcoat’s Daughter

A24

A major hit with critics following its recent film festival run, Osgood Perkins’ (son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins) directorial debut The Blackcoat’s Daughter focuses on two girls – the seemingly innocent Kat, played by Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, and likeable bad girl Rose, played by Lucy Boynton of feel-good Irish musical Sing Street – stranded at their isolated prep school after their parents fail to pick them up for a winter break.

Throw in a creepy connected subplot featuring Emma Roberts as runaway hitchhiker Joan who is taken in by grieving parents Bill (James Remar) and Linda (Lauren Holly) with questionable motives, and add to that Kat’s increasingly terrifying visions, and it seems there may be something more sinister at work than just negligent parents.

Praised for its atmospheric visuals and mounting sense of claustrophobia and terror, The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a slow-burner that will appeal more to fans of psychological scares than schlock shocks and gore, but it’s nevertheless a fresh, indie take on horror’s hackneyed possession theme.
