When French director-screenwriter Julia Ducournau’s debut
feature film was shown at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival,
paramedics were called to the scene when several audience members were reduced
to quivering, vomiting messes after witnessing the movie’s more visceral
scenes. Now, it could be that TIFF goers are simply weak-stomached but any kind
of horror that elicits such a reaction is definitely worth watching.
Up-and-coming talent Garance Marillier plays virginal vegetarian Justine who, after being peer pressured into eating raw rabbit liver during a veterinary school hazing, finds she has more than just a regular carnivorous craving for all things fleshy.
Hailed as reminiscent of horror classics like Suspiria and Carrie with a hearty dose of cannibalism thrown in, Raw – which scooped a FIPRESCI Award after its Cannes premiere – is a definite must-see for any dedicated fans of horror in 2017.
