10 Best & 10 Worst Horror Movies Of 2016
6. The Forest
Filmmaker Jason Zada’s feature-length debut The Forest is a subpar horror set in the infamous Aokigahara Forest, which bears the unfortunate claim to fame of being Japan’s number one suicide spot. Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer stars as identical twins Sara and Jess, who like many movie twins share a spooky psychic bond and are identifiable only by their different hair colours, and finds herself lost in the forest when investigating her twin sister’s disappearance and suspected suicide.
Unfortunately, the talents of Dormer can’t save the movie from being anything other than an abysmal, un-scary mess and the fact it was a waste of moviegoer money wasn’t the only controversy attached to it.
Not only was the movie accused of sharing borderline plagiaristic elements including its title, plot and aesthetic with Spanish comic book writer El Torres’ 2011 work The Suicide Forest, it’s also faced criticism for trivialising the real-life suicides that take place all too frequently in Aokigahara Forest too.
