10 Best High School Horror Movies

7. Prom Night

Thanks to Halloween's success, producers were keen to release more slashers themed around annual traditions. Set during a high school seniors' prom (obviously), the film follows a masked killer out to avenge the death of a young girl six years prior. Haunted by a childhood prank that went fatally wrong, the group responsible have kept it hush-hush ever since, blissfully ignorant of the killer watching from the shadows.

Jamie Lee Curtis (at the height of her scream queen notoriety) portrays Kim, a sensible, popular, rather too perfect high schooler. She hangs out with the guilty party, completely oblivious to their involvement in her younger sister's death.

Prom Night's violence is surprisingly muted for a slasher, with a heavier emphasis on suspense for each vengeful slaying. Enough time is given to the characters for them to feel human and three-dimensional before they’re taken out. It also touches on a variety of the usual topics you'd expect in a teen flick and has scenes reminiscent of everything from Saturday Night Fever to Carrie.

Not to mention Leslie Nielsen in a serious role, which is fascinating in itself.

John Cunningham hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
