Horror is so often a genre built on the legacy and influence of what has come before and worked, with originality often increasingly put to one side when a franchise starts to become lukewarm. However, one series that continually pushed the boundaries of imagination and creativity is Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street.

The story of a child killer turned dream demon who rattles off cheesy quips and takes out teens in some seriously elaborate ways, Freddy Kruger was the first killer who was not only happy with everyone seeing his face and how much he enjoyed killing, but was also the one of the first villains audiences actively wanted to see come out on top.

Horror had always been slightly taboo within mainstream society, however that really began to change with Freddy, Nancy and co. With the heyday of the Nightmare series coinciding with the rise of channels like MTV, Freddy Kruger soon began popping up in his very own TV shows, music videos and his films were suddenly filled to the brim with references and stylistic features that really made horror, for the first time, cool.

Horror fan, gamer, all round subpar content creator. Strongly believes that Toad is the real hero of the Mario universe, and that we've probably had enough Batman origin stories.
