In Norwegian horror The Ugly Stepsister, Cinderella's story is told from the viewpoint of her unsightly stepsister, Elvira.

Desperate to woo Prince John, Elvira has her braces ripped off, shatters her bulbous nose, ingests a tapeworm to lose weight, and surgically grafts alluring eyelashes onto her face.

However, despite Elvira's efforts, John falls for Cinderella, unaware of her identity. When he finds her slipper, the Prince declares he'll marry the woman whose foot fits in the shoe.

Elvira steals the other shoe and attempts to put it on, only to realise her feet are too big. Taking a butcher knife in hand, Elvira lops off her toes while letting out a glass-shattering scream. And just when it feels like the scene has crescendoed, her mother bursts in and points out that the Prince has the left shoe... meaning Elvira mutilated the wrong foot. What's worse is that the mother is on board with Elvira's plan and spurs her daughter to disfigure her remaining foot.

Due to Elvira's descent into madness, this climax shouldn't be a surprise - especially since it's lifted from the original story - but it's not the gore that sells this moment; it's more that Elvira has fully indulged in her self-destruction. Because of this, watching Elvira hack her toes off isn't just gross but depressing.
