Bring Her Back isn't just one of 2025's most unsettling films, but it also has one of the most haunting images of the year.

Helmed by Danny and Michael Phillipou, the supernatural horror begins with orphaned teens Andy and Piper being taken in by a foster mother, Laura. After learning Laura is also looking after a disturbed boy called Oliver, Andy suspects his new carer harbours a dark secret.

While babysitting Oliver, Andy offers him a slice of fruit on a kitchen knife. With no warning, Oliver grabs the knife and attempts to eat it, shredding his teeth and gums. Now, any horror veteran should've suspected something grisly was going to happen when they saw this creepy kid and a knife in the same shot. However, few were prepared to see gore on this magnitude, especially towards a child.

The scene doesn't come across as gratuitous, since it compounds the mystery surrounding Oliver. It also elevates the stakes since Laura is trying to get rid of Andy, so he can't protect Piper. Since Oliver mutilated himself under Andy's watch, Laura is in her right to throw him out and use Piper for her own nefarious agenda. 

So, not only does this moment effectively advance the story and create a massive conflict, but it's also sure to traumatise many viewers for a very long time.
