As coming-of-age movies go, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is up there with the best. Based on the book by Stephen Chbosky (who also directed the film), the story follows Charlie Kelmeckis, a high-school student suffering from depression and anxiety.

Due to Chbosky’s terrific writing and direction, The Perks of Being a Wallflower has much more substance than the majority of films in this genre. Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller perfectly capture the joys and sorrows of their respective characters. And you soon disassociate Watson with the famous Hermione Granger due to her great American accent.

Though the best parts of the film push on the audience’s emotions, the comedy is also well-executed. The high-school humour is totally believable and Miller’s performance as Patrick is laugh-out-loud funny at times.

If you’re a fan of the coming-of-age genre, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an easy recommendation.
