10 Best Movies Set On Halloween Night

3. Trick 'R Treat

31 Rob Zombie
Warner Premiere

The third, final and best of the anthology scares on this list, Trick 'R Treat is a doozy for all horror fans wanting to indulge in some Halloween tales of terror. Michael Dougherty's now cult movie was released in 2007 and picked up critical acclaim for its well paced, well acted compilation of scares, despite major difficulties in distribution resulting in a direct-to-video release.

Trick 'R Treat is structured around Sam, a masked trick or treater who all assume is a child (he turns out to be a lot more, but that would be spoiling it) who not only frames the larger plot and has an entry of his own towards the end, but who also deserved an entire movie to himself.

With star turns from Anna Paquin, Brian Cox (no, not that one) and Dylan Baker, Hollywood's permanent best supporting actor nominee (seriously, when will he get his own film?), proceedings are not short on talent and it shows in the finished product.

Five interconnected tales from the dark side involve a high school principle turned serial killer, a couple who seriously regret blowing out the candles in their pumpkins, a college virgin who is not as innocent as she seems and a school prank that goes badly wrong. If gothic horror is the Brits go-to genre for scares, then urban terror is surely in the invention of America and Trick 'R Treat, like the early Carpenter flicks, has this in spades.
