10 Best Scary Movies For People Who Hate Horror

1. Horror Express (1974)

30 Days Of Night
Hammer Film Productions

In an age of immaculate special effects and over-exuberant CGI the art of telling a gritty and grounded narrative can get lost in the shuffle. 1972's The Horror Express is a great departure which gloriously blends long-lost classic horror storytelling with the witty charm and progressive production techniques of modern day movies.

In 1906 a luxurious Express Train travelling from China to Moscow is terrorised by a mysterious creature found on a prior expedition by leading Anthropologist Dr Saxton (Lee). Dr Saxton believes the creature to be a lost piece of human evolution and so is transporting it back to Europe in a controlled crate.

Lee and Cushing both provide wonderfully intricate and layered performances. Lee's patented blend of charisma and charm lend themselves perfectly to delivering a believable character coming to terms with the peril of the situation, and Cushing with a tremendous portrayal of a man following the arc of doubt to understanding, all at the steady pace the film follows.

The Horror Express is a grounded, well written, well performed feature that fans of other genres will find this movie sincere, playful and delightful. Littered with comedic wit and charm working in conjunction with a strong narrative that's easy to follow, this is a movie which has plenty to offer audiences from all realms of film.
