Cube Death
Fox Searchlight Pictures

In the year 2057, a team of astronauts are travelling through space with a gigantic bomb in tow headed towards the Sun, in the hopes of reigniting it before it is forever extinguished, thus ending all life on Earth. When they come across the abandoned remnants of the last attempt to carry out the same mission, physicist Robert Capa (Cillian Murphy) suggests that the team also use the bomb from the first mission's ship, reasoning that two bombs are more likely to restart The Sun than one bomb.

After boarding the new ship, the crew's mission becomes drastically more difficult, as they have to deal with damaged equipment, lack of resources and the continued danger of the same threat that wiped out the first crew. As the Sun draws closer, the crew have to balance their own survival with the consequences of what will happen if they fail their mission.

Before shooting began, director Danny Boyle had his cast partake in a number of different activities so that the actors would be as familiar with each other as their characters were meant to be. This included space training, scuba diving, zero gravity experiences and pilot training, which also served as a way of method acting that immersed the cast in to their roles.

Although the film does not focus on extraterrestrial life the way that Life and Event Horizon do, the way that it handles the dangers of space travel and the gravity of the situation that the characters find themselves in is where the horror of the film comes from. Rather than relying on jump scares or visceral gore that other films do, it focuses on the psychological pressure of the situation instead to instil fear and panic into the audience.
