10 Best Steven Spielberg Films
8. Schindler’s List
Spielberg has no one template that he sticks to like many other big filmmakers do. And nothing proves that more than Schindler’s List.
A real man who saved thousands of Jews from extermination, Oskar Schindler (played by Liam Neeson) instead employed the Jewish people in his factories. He was assisted in the creation of his list by accountant Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley). The film is shot in black and white, following Schindler from the conception of his idea right through to when he has to flee Germany to avoid capture by the Red Army.
There are set pieces here but many of them tug emotional heartstrings as, through performances like Ralph Fiennes as camp commandant Amon Goeth, we see the mindless brutality of the Nazi regime. Spielberg approached the project like a documentary hoping to give it a sense of timelessness and he succeeded every step of the way.
