9. The BFG

It’s rare that big budget blockbuster is so charming but The BFG, an adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel of the same name, manages to be all that and more.

In the film a young girl, Sophie, is snatched from the orphanage she calls home by a giant she spies late one night. Upon realising that this giant is in fact the only friendly giant in a clan of murderous child eating giants, Sophie hatches a plan to thwart the wrongdoers enlisting the help of the Queen of England as she goes.

Mark Rylance plays the titular friendly giant using motion capture technology to avoid any awkward slips in CGI. His performance, buoyed a great turn by newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, a classic good vs evil plot. Where the film really becomes charming is when our two heros journey to London to enlist the help of the Queen of England. There are plenty of laughs here, setting up for when the film has to get darker near the finale.
