10 Best Summer Camp Horror Movies

8. Madman (1982)

Stage Fright 2014
Jensen Farley Pictures

This early 80s slasher was originally based on the New York urban legend, Cropsey. Unfortunately for the production team, however, another film had already called dibs on that antagonist and had started work on it earlier, so they had to make some last minute changes to their plans.

Instead this film revolves around the fictional urban legend of Madman Marz, a murderer who killed his wife and children with an axe and can be summoned by anyone simply by saying his name.

After telling the story of Marz around the campfire, of course one camper had to get cocky and summon him. As expected, all hell breaks loose and one by one each of the campers and counsellors are hunted and murdered.

It is the quintessential summer camp slasher; complete with the urban legend, the axe-murderer, the annoying teenagers and a whole load of death. It’s not sophisticated filmmaking in any sense of the word but it offers up exactly what you want from this niche and it does so with pride.
