10 Best Summer Camp Horror Movies

2. Sleepaway Camp

Sleepaway Camp is probably best known for its shocking twist ending, with one particular scene often doing the rounds on social media. More than just one moment though, this film is an unmistakable staple of the genre all around.

After a child is tragically killed by a careless speedboat driver near Camp Arawak, the child’s sibling (Angela) is years later sent to the camp to experience it for the first time with her cousin Ricky.

Angela is bullied and harassed, with Ricky often having to step in to defend her. However after a while a pattern emerges that sees those who have wronged Angela end up dead or injured in bizarre accidents. Coincidence? I think not.

With a list of entertaining kills and race to track down the killer, this slasher is certainly engaging if not slightly ridiculous at times. Because of the whole ‘dead child in a lake’ premise, it is often compared to Friday the 13th but it still holds its own, not being pushed into obscurity by the Voorhees’ shadow.
